The Corktown location opened in 2014. The owner's first salon helped build and grow Royal Oak, and the salon describes itself as award-winning. Jeph Wright leads the team as owner and creative director.

Services cover haircuts, including children's cuts, color and balayage, and formal hair and makeup for occasions. Color and treatment services include a complimentary blow dry, done by the next available assistant; a guest who wants a particular stylist for it can book a color and blow dry with that stylist for an additional charge. The salon suggests booking one to two weeks ahead and keeping cuts and color services up every 6 to 8 weeks. Children should not be brought in during extended services because of the chemicals, sharp tools and hot tools used.

Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday noon to 7pm, Thursday noon to 9pm, Friday noon to 7pm and Saturday noon to 5pm. Appointments can be booked online through GlossGenius or by phone at (313) 800-5184. A parking garage sits directly behind the building, a $5 lot is across the street at Michigan Ave and Wabash St, and metered street parking runs along Michigan Ave.

Gift certificates cover all services and products, and gift cards come in $50, $75, $100 and $200 amounts or a custom amount; gift card sales are final. Clients who are unhappy with a service are asked to tell the salon manager within 7 days of the appointment. The salon also sells its own Black the Salon products and accepts applications from people interested in serving as hair models for its academy work, which is shown on live models.
