About

Wavelength is a private, by-appointment studio on the fourth floor of an elevator building at 117 Grattan St. in Brooklyn. It opened in 2021 and works as a collective: each independent stylist sets their own policies, pricing and booking. The studio is about a five-minute walk from the Morgan L train, and chairs are available to rent for stylists with a busy clientele, who can email their experience, services and website or social links.

Booking happens online through the Team and Services page rather than by email. Haircuts are booked through the link under each stylist's bio, and new clients who want color must complete a Hair Color Inquiry Form before booking. Walk-ins are not accepted, but same-day appointments are available. Cancellations and changes go directly to the stylist through the method on their booking page, and the contact form receives a reply within one to two business days.

Hours are Monday and Tuesday 10 AM to 8 PM, Wednesday 11 AM to 8 PM, Thursday 9 AM to 8 PM, Friday 10 AM to 7 PM, Saturday 11 AM to 9 PM and Sunday 10 AM to 9 PM. Weekday evenings after 5 PM are the busiest stretch, while weekday mornings, afternoons and weekends tend to be calmer. Quiet appointments with minimal conversation can be requested at intake or at the appointment. Music plays at conversational volume and blow dryers add noise. The studio is not fragrance-free, since hair color, styling products, shampoos and fragrances are used regularly throughout.

Service animals are welcome, and well-behaved pet dogs are allowed in the studio. One stylist usually brings a small dog on Sundays, and clients with concerns can let the salon know in advance.

Getting in requires using an intercom and opening two doors by hand, as neither has a power-assisted opener. Stylists can meet clients on the street and guide them into the elevator. Hallways and doorways on the route are wide enough for a wheelchair, and services can be done from a salon chair or directly from a wheelchair. Shampoo sinks are not currently set up for wheelchairs, and salon chairs hold up to 350 lbs. There is no private restroom: gendered and gender-neutral restrooms are in the shared fourth-floor hallway, and a wheelchair-accessible restroom is on the ground floor, reached by elevator.

A collective of independent stylists, each setting their own policies, pricing and style, working under one by-appointment roof.

A brightly lit studio with music at conversational volume, where hair color, products and fragrances are part of the everyday air.
