Ubuntu Hair Studio is a small salon run by its owner, Dawn Ellinwood, who is also the colorist. The studio focuses on aging hair and aims to help clients feel and look good at any age. It sits inside InStyle Salons, with Goodonya next door, and is a short drive from downtown Encinitas and a few blocks from the coast.

The menu is organized into four groups: color, cut and style, scalp care, and texture. Color services include balayage, lowlights, glossing, corrective color and INOA. Scalp care includes a standard scalp facial, a Moxie scalp facial and a deep conditioning treatment. Texture services cover anti-curl and straightening, and cut and style services include blowdries, bang trims and a cut-and-go option.

The salon uses Milbon products and works with the Nutrafol and Agent Nature lines. Milbon was chosen for its versatility and performance, according to the salon. For color, the studio relies mainly on L'Oreal Professionnel, including INOA, INOA Supreme, Majirel, Majiblond, DiaRichess, DiaLight and Luo. Between appointments, clients can use Style Edit Root Touch-Up, a powder that covers grey roots and washes out with shampoo. The salon also plans to add products that support hair growth and scalp health.

Appointments are made by calling the salon. Gift certificates can be bought the same way, in any dollar amount. Payment is accepted in cash, by debit card, and by Visa, Mastercard or American Express credit card.

The studio takes a holistic view of hair, with attention to aging hair and to scalp health alongside color and cutting.
