The Only Gray

The Only Gray operates as a small private studio at ground level in Historic Pepper Place, just beneath the Odette building in Birmingham, Alabama. The business grew out of its owner stylist's work, with his base in Birmingham established in 2023. The salon describes its hair as having a Beverly Hills style, while its address is in Birmingham.

Each visit is one guest at a time in a private suite. A first visit opens with a free consultation that includes a hands-on look at the hair and a plan before any service. A $100 card deposit confirms the appointment that follows and is deducted from that visit's price. Prices depend on hair amount, service time and prior treatments, and clients hear the price before any work begins.

Color is the studio's central focus. Gray blending places highlights and lowlights around a client's own gray hair to soften the regrowth line. Color correction is also offered, and the stylist looks at the existing color in person before working on it. A blowout comes with every color or cut and is not sold separately. The studio does not offer weddings, proms or updos, and shoot, editorial and campaign work is booked by referral.

Several free parking lots sit on the same block, with street parking nearby, and the studio is wheelchair accessible by freight elevator. Appointments are usually booked three or more weeks ahead, and a cancellation list is kept. Changes made with more than 24 hours' notice carry no charge, and shorter notice should be texted. Payment is taken by cash, Venmo or card. Gift cards are not sold, but clients can arrange and pay ahead for someone else. Children and dogs are not permitted in the studio.
