About

The Hair Station was founded in 1984 by a mother and daughter, Mary Lewis and Debbie Marc. It started in a few rooms upstairs in its current building and later grew to fill the whole house, a three-story building from the early 1900s beside the train tracks. The current owners took over in November 2019. The owner, Megan, first worked at the salon as a booth renter and later as a stylist.

A visit usually begins with a consultation, which can be in person, digital or by phone. Clients can upload inspiration photos and complete a digital form before their visit, and it goes straight to their stylist. The conversation covers hair goals, concerns, history and daily life. The stylist checks the condition of the hair before suggesting a plan, explains each step as they work, and takes preferences into account. Color transformations need a consultation before they are booked. Before clients leave, stylists give at-home care tips, suggest products and can pre-book the next appointment. Between visits, the team offers styling advice and product recommendations.

The owners say the salon is built on customer service, kindness, honesty and care, and that clients are listened to. Every team member is professionally trained in color, cutting, styling and treatments. Each stylist has personal specialties, and clients can browse the team by specialty to find a match. The salon aims to offer the same level of service whichever stylist a client chooses. It also says it wants stylists to be able to work, grow and build careers there, with support and education along the way, and it has a Join The Team page for hiring.

The first floor has four styling stations, a shampoo area and a waiting area with drinks, and one station stays open for guests who would rather not use the stairs. Upstairs there is a color room, a break room, four more stations and a second shampoo area. No more than two stylists work in one room at a time. Clients are asked to arrive five to ten minutes early. Walk-ins are welcome depending on availability, but booking is recommended by phone or through the online portal. Appointments cancelled at least four hours ahead can be changed online, and anything closer must be done by phone; very late cancellations or no-shows may incur a fee of 50 percent of the service. New guests booking color transformations of four hours or more pay a $100 deposit, which goes toward the final balance. Children under 12 cannot stay with a client during an appointment, clients under 18 need a parent or guardian present for the consultation and service, and elderly or disabled clients need a caretaker with them throughout.

The rewards program needs no sign-up: clients are enrolled on their first visit, and 100 points equal $1. New clients receive $10 after their first appointment, and existing clients earn $25 for each referral who completes and pays for a first visit. Rewards can be used on hair services or professional haircare, expire three months after the last visit, have no cash value and generally cannot be combined with other offers. The salon does not give refunds on services, but it will work with clients to correct the result. Concerns should be raised within five days, and adjustments are scheduled within ten days of the visit. Retail products can be returned or exchanged within 30 days with a receipt. The salon also has a Model Club, a blog called The Hair Journal, and an online shop for gift certificates and products. Menu prices are starting prices that depend on each stylist. Booking is available by phone at 410-796-4684.

Each appointment starts with the client's goals, concerns and daily routine, and the stylist assesses the hair before recommending a plan. Stylists explain what they are doing and why during the service.

A relaxed, welcoming space with an intimate, personal feel inside a converted early-1900s house.
