Sugar Pop has offered sugaring in Chicago since 2017 and operates as an independent salon rather than part of a chain or franchise. The salon describes itself as the first sugaring-focused salon in the city and reports more than 300 five-star Google reviews.

About

The sugar paste is made from sugar, water and lemon, with no resins or synthetic additives. It is applied warm and pulled off in the direction hair grows. Services are adjusted to each client's skin, whatever their skin type, hair texture or skin tone.

Estheticians learn one-on-one and hands-on alongside the owners, and keep being mentored after their training ends. The team is paid a fair wage instead of depending on tips, so the listed price is the price paid and no gratuity is expected.

Before a first visit, hair should be about a quarter inch long and not shaved, and skin should be exfoliated the day before and kept free of lotion or self-tanner. Clients using retinoids or strong acids are asked to pause them at least a week before face sugaring, and anyone taking Accutane cannot be sugared. Arriving five minutes early is requested. Cancellations need at least 24 hours' notice, and changes inside that window carry a 50% service fee.

The studio sits a short walk from the CTA Green and Pink Lines at Morgan and Ashland, and the number 20 Madison bus stops at the door. Parking is metered on Madison, free on Monroe after 9am, and there are several paid lots nearby.

Treatments are fitted to each client's skin and hair, and aftercare guidance asks clients to skip saunas, hot tubs and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours, to exfoliate a few times a week, and to moisturize daily with a fragrance-free lotion.
