Studio 39 opened in July 2001 in a loft on 39th Street in Kansas City. After outgrowing that space, it moved to a gallery in the West Side/Crossroads area, and its current downtown salon was built in a former 4,000 square foot warehouse starting around 2010. The downtown space was designed around teaching, mentorship and the client experience. Founder Gemy Chiarizio opened the salon at age 24.

The salon operates as a mentor salon, moving stylists through associate, advanced, senior and master levels, and runs training in haircutting, hair color, highlighting and blonde work. According to the salon, it calls itself the original blonde specialists salon in Kansas City, and its team was among the earliest in the region to bring advanced balayage and platinum global coloring to clients. Balayage has been on offer since 2004. The salon is a certified L'Oréal Professional salon, has held certification in luxury hair extensions since 2007, and says it works with eight professional hair companies. It is also a curly certified salon.

Most new color clients, all extension clients and most luxury services start with a consultation. Color consultations run about 30 minutes and the fee is applied to the service booked. Prices depend on stylist level, skill, time and demand, with corrective color as the exception. Signature haircuts begin with a consultation, a relaxing shampoo and scalp massage, and finish with a dry styling. Haircuts are based on a standard 45 minute to one hour cut and blow-dry, and extra time may cost more with advanced or higher-level stylists. The salon recommends haircuts every one to three months, depending on length.

Booking has some firm terms. A pre-authorized credit card is required for every guest, and deposits are held on cards for certain services. A 3% card processing fee applies per transaction, which paying cash after the first service avoids. Color cancellations need 48 hours' notice to avoid fees, regular guests need 24 hours' notice to reschedule, and the no-show fee is 50% of the service for existing guests, with repeat no-shows required to prepay. Online reservations are prepaid and must be canceled by phone, and online booking is not available for platinum or corrective color. Services are not refunded, though guests who ask for a cut adjustment within a week may receive it at no charge. Active military and police receive 10% off services.
