The business began as a hobby when founder Joyce Poon opened its first location in Vancouver in 2008. It has since grown to five locations across Canada and the United States. The salon describes itself as North America's premier lash destination.

Noir develops its own adhesives and lashes, and its lashes and adhesives are custom made in-house. According to the site, it has provided more than 200,000 sets of extensions. It added false eyelashes to its range in 2013 and has released two capsule collections, with a third in development.

A visit begins with sizing. Extensions are matched to what each client's natural lashes can comfortably carry, which the salon says helps reduce breakage. Each lash is applied individually onto a natural lash, and the adhesive is stated to bond for two to eight weeks. Lower lashes are available as a finishing add-on, and lash cleansing is offered; the salon says cleansing helps prevent clogged pores and buildup. Clients who keep their extensions are asked to cleanse every two months in place of a removal.

There are a few booking rules to know. Fills are not done on sets applied by other salons, so those clients book an External Removal followed by a Full Set. Removal of Noir extensions is a separate 15-minute appointment, and clients are asked to book it ahead of a Full Set if needed. Trainee appointments are performed by students in training, are described as about 70 percent full at the Lower Lonsdale location, may not last as long, cannot be filled, and come with no compensation for dissatisfaction.

Beyond lashes, the menu includes brow tinting and lamination, lash lifts with tint, threading, microneedling with LED light, and a quick strip lash service. The Lower Lonsdale location lists the widest range of categories. Listed prices differ by location and follow each location's booking menu.

The salon sizes extensions to what each client's natural lashes can handle in order to reduce breakage. Its adhesive is described as free of latex, parabens and formaldehyde, and its products are not tested on animals.
