Nalu has operated in Birmingham since 2018, and the owner, Neil Johnson, says the salon concept took about 20 years to bring to completion. The Troy location opened after the Birmingham salon and is the newer of the two.

The name comes from a Hawaiian word meaning wave, or to form waves, and also to ponder or meditate. The space is designed to feel relaxed and homelike for both staff and clients, with an aloha-inspired atmosphere.

Pricing is a la carte, with special bundled prices available. Women's haircuts run from $60 to $95, men's from $40 to $65, and children's from $35 to $55. Blow outs start at $55, hair treatments at $25, gloss treatments at $65 and keratin treatments at $350. Full balayage starts at $155 and single process color at $135. Hair extension pricing is set after a consultation. Manicures start at $25 and pedicures at $55, available at the Birmingham location only. Energy work sessions are offered at $65 for 30 minutes and $125 for one hour. Free on-site parking is available at both locations, and gift certificates can be purchased online.

The salon holds Green Circle Certified Salon status and takes part in the network's beauty waste recovery program.
