Mint Hair Crafting

Mint Hair Crafting was founded in 2016 by Stacey Rackham, first on South Center Street in Royal Oak. The salon relocated to Ferndale in July 2022. According to the salon, it aims to be inclusive and welcoming, and its clients come from Ferndale, Royal Oak, Detroit, Hazel Park and surrounding communities. The shampoo area was remodeled in 2016 with low lighting and aromatherapy scents to create a calmer wash experience.

Melt Head Spa was created in 2023 after conversations with the team and longtime guests about scalp massage. The 60-minute Signature Melt Headspa costs $105 and combines gentle scalp massage, steam and customized scalp and hair treatments; pairing it with a blowout makes a 90-minute visit for $150. The salon describes Melt Head Spa as viral and calls itself Ferndale's first head spa. It suggests booking the head spa about 48 hours after a color service. Head spa services are not given on fresh extensions or on broken or oozing skin, and those guests are referred to medical guidance.

Every visit can start with a 30-minute consultation for $30, which is applied to the appointment total if a service is booked that day. The consultation covers hair condition, density and texture, color history and maintenance, and ends with a timing and cost estimate and a plan for the first service. Consultations are recommended for big changes, box dye or unknown color history, vivid shades, and extensions or gray blending. A test strand may be discussed during the consultation before a full color service. Guests can request a quiet appointment with little conversation, and laptops are welcome during appointments. Robes are available on request, Wi-Fi is offered, and no products need to be bought.

The salon recycles hair, foils and chemical waste, reuses packing materials locally, and furnishes its space with secondhand and thrifted pieces. It supports local animal and community groups, hosts an annual day of free gender-affirming haircuts with Affirmations, holds puppy yoga with local rescue groups, and hosts Ferndale High School students building workplace skills.
