Hair Rules

Hair Rules is a multi-textural hair studio in New York that opened in 2009. It organizes its work by where a person's hair sits on a spectrum running from kinky to curly, wavy or straight. The business also sells its own hair product line, launched in 2007, and offers brand consulting. It describes itself as the first multi-textural studio in the U.S.

The studio is on the third floor of a historic two-floor walk-up with no elevator. Services are by appointment only and booked online. Clients are asked to arrive 10 minutes early with their hair unbound and free of extensions, braids or twists, and an appointment is rescheduled if the client is 15 minutes or more late. Each service includes shampoo and conditioning. Protective styles such as twist-outs, braid-outs, weaves and wigs are handled at the appointment, and any protective style worn three to four weeks or more should be washed beforehand. Hair that takes 15 minutes or more to work through may incur a detangling fee or service may be declined. For color, relaxers, keratin, blowouts, curly styles or curly lessons, service may be declined if the client has not had a haircut in three months or more.

Cancellations and reschedules should be made online at least 24 hours ahead. Changes inside that window carry a $75 fee, as does arriving 30 minutes late, and a no-show is charged the full booked amount. Clients have two weeks to rebook a cancelled appointment without being recharged. Changes should be emailed to salon@hairrules.com rather than phoned, except for Atlanta and Los Angeles bookings. Gratuity is cash only, and companions are not allowed during appointments unless under 15.

Beyond the studio chair, the business offers one-on-one virtual sessions with Dickey and the team. Its consulting work covers product innovation, brand strategy, cultural fluency, institutional education, creative direction and product R&D. Styling for commercial productions, television and celebrities is handled as pro artistry, with bookings made through The Rex Agency.
