Walk-ins are welcome and no appointment is needed. Clients who want to save their place can use Online Check-In, which adds them to the waitlist and shows estimated wait times. It is a place in line rather than a booked appointment, and it cannot be used for perms or formal updos. Clients who want a specific stylist can ask at check-in, though that may lengthen the wait, and stylist schedules are not published.

Each visit starts with a consultation so the stylist can learn what the client has in mind. Clients can browse the Great Clips haircut lookbook online and bring a look to the chair. Stylists work with all hair types and textures, and the salon says its team trains regularly in haircutting and barbershop techniques. Clip Notes records technical notes on past cuts so any stylist in the network can repeat a haircut.

The menu covers men's, women's, kids' and senior haircuts, along with a range of additional services and three levels of hair styling. Coloring is not offered. Perms are available at some locations, so clients should call to confirm. The salon also takes part in community programs: Wigs for Kids at participating salons, Clips of Kindness clipper cuts for people in cancer treatment, and free haircuts or haircut cards for service members on Veterans Day. Haircuts are also available for people with sensory or special needs, with reasonable accommodations.
