Fringe Salon started as an alternative beauty space and later narrowed its focus to natural texture. The salon describes its team as Philly texture experts, and its work centers on wavy, curly and coily hair, with an emphasis on self-acceptance and on teaching clients how to care for their curls at home.

The salon is on the fifth floor of the Bok Building, a former vocational school that now houses a creative hub with more than 200 tenants. Visitors enter through the 9th Street doors and take the stairs or elevator up. Clients may record wash and styling sessions at the shampoo bowl, and bringing photos or inspiration images is welcome.

A Curly Cut is done dry, then washed and styled with curl-safe products and checked for accuracy. Color work begins with a consultation and a color prep service, and the 15-minute Color Consultation is a talk only, with no color applied. A $50 deposit is taken at booking for color services and goes toward the service, and color pricing depends on hair length and density, the product used, and the number of steps. The Bounce Back Treatment can also be booked on its own online.

Beyond appointments, the salon hosts Curly Girl Workshops, product swap pop-ups, one-night product deals and gallery events every two months. The salon says it was featured in a Modern Salon article about the curl movement.

The philosophy centers on self-acceptance, curl care education that clients can take home, and community involvement.

A rotating in-house art gallery shows Philadelphia-based artists, and past events have ranged from multimedia shows and DJ sets to live bluegrass and neo soul.
