FrancesRay Jules opened in 2001 and is named after the founder's parents, Ray and Frances. Within five years it had grown to about four times its original size. After the economic downturn the salon scaled back, and later expanded its Boston location from four styling stations to six. The expansion added a color bar, a larger nail area, full skin care, waxing, massage and body treatments. The salon describes itself as a top-rated beauty salon in Boston.

Before joining outside education events, every stylist and assistant must first complete training with the owner in the salon. Team members have since taken workshops run by Wella International, Bio Ionic, Sebastian International, Sexy Hair Concepts, Aquage and American Crew. Over time the salon has also given support to several charities: Dress for Success, The Ellie Fund, American Heart Association, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer.

Booking is available online or by phone. A complimentary 15-minute consultation can be booked for any salon service, and it is required before perms, relaxers, ionic and extension services. For extensions, prices are discussed at the consultation, and the hair itself is charged separately from the service. Color correction begins with a personalized consultation and an assessment of hair health. A credit card is needed to book. Cancellations with less than 48 hours' notice are charged half the service total, an 18% gratuity is added to the total, and clients who arrive more than 15 minutes late may need to change or reschedule. Gift certificates are available for any service or amount, but cannot be exchanged for cash or retail products and are non-refundable. Personal checks are not accepted.

The salon is open Tuesday and Thursday from 11 AM to 8 PM, Wednesday and Friday from 1 PM to 8 PM, and Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. It is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Makeup is a large part of the offering. Jules Makeup is the salon's own cosmetics line, created by its makeup artists in Boston and sold only at the salon, with products priced from $10 to $25. Classes range from a one-hour application session covering brush technique, color analysis, helpful hints and a daily skincare routine, to a two-hour class that adds basic contouring and highlighting. Bridal hair and makeup can be done in the salon or on location for an additional charge, and the wedding and formal prices are starting rates that vary by location, party size and makeup artist.
