About

COLLECTIV Academy was founded by Kenny and Lenore Gibson, who previously worked with TONI&GUY. The owners describe themselves as hairstylists with experience as educators. The Sandy campus has been operating for about ten years, and the school now runs six campuses across Utah, Texas, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The cosmetology program covers haircutting, coloring, styling, manicuring, skincare and makeup, along with state-required sanitation, safety and professional ethics. Esthetics programs focus on skincare and run 750 hours in Dallas and Fort Worth and 600 hours in Cranston. Advanced education courses, including lash extensions, are offered at some locations. Utah requires 1,000 hours of state-approved training for a cosmetology license.

Training is hands-on from the first day and classes are kept small, so students get more one-on-one time with educators. Students at Sandy practice on live models in real salon settings from the start. Practical work with clients takes place in the student salon under the supervision of licensed instructors, and training moves through five levels, from foundational technique to advanced salon work. Students also learn client consultations, retail sales, marketing and salon management, and can take a Beauty as a Business course on social media and digital marketing.

Student salon and spa services are booked by phone at (888) 908-3211 and are performed by students. Prices vary by campus. The school says its salon services offer high-end results at a fraction of the cost. Students use professional salon-level tools and can keep their kits after school, and they can take part in events such as Hair Camp, Color Camp, an annual student hair show, photo shoots and demonstrations by national guest artists.

Sandy applicants need a high school diploma or GED equivalent and must submit identification, a non-refundable $50 registration fee, an application and three references. Financial aid, including federal grants and scholarships, is available to those who qualify. Job placement is not guaranteed, but career coaching, resume building and networking opportunities are provided.

Hands-on, supervised training that starts on day one and builds through five levels, from foundational techniques to advanced salon applications.

The Dallas and Braintree campuses are designed to resemble high-end salons, and the Worcester clinic floor is set up to run like a real salon.
