About

COLLECTIV Academy was founded by Kenny and Lenore Gibson, who previously worked with TONI&GUY Hairdressing. The school describes its owners as professional hairstylists with experience as educators, and says it was built by industry professionals. Its stated mission is to deliver an education that is relevant to the industry and prepares students for it. The Sandy, Utah campus has operated for 10 years, and the school states it was a finalist in the Specialty School category of Best of SLC in 2020.

Cosmetology training covers haircutting, coloring, styling, manicuring, skincare and makeup, and at Sandy also chemical services, nail care, salon business and state board preparation. Utah requires 1,000 hours of state-approved cosmetology training to become a licensed cosmetologist, and the school says its Utah training meets that requirement. Dallas and Fort Worth offer both cosmetology and esthetics, Braintree and Worcester offer cosmetology, and Cranston offers both. The Fort Worth campus has provisional accreditation from NACCAS, and the Dallas campus has provisional additional location accreditation. The school states its training prepares students to sit for the state board exam, and it says there is no prior experience required to enroll in the Sandy cosmetology program.

Classes are kept small, so students get more one-on-one time with educators. Training is intensive and hands-on from the start. At Sandy, students work on live models with professional tools from day one, then move through five levels from freshman to graduating senior, practicing on mannequins and models first and on real clients in the student salon later under instructor supervision. Cranston training is organized into phases that move from foundational skills to advanced techniques, with individualized support. Salon and spa services are performed by students and supervised by licensed instructors or educators, and the school says these services offer high-end results at a fraction of the usual cost.

Outside scheduled class hours, students can get involved in hair and color camps led by working industry professionals, an annual student hair soiree, photo shoots, demonstrations by visiting artists of national standing, fashion shows, competitions and community events, though the mix varies by campus. The Beauty as a Business course addresses social media and digital marketing. Business instruction at Sandy also covers client consultations, retail selling, marketing and running a salon. Sandy is a MONEY Edu school in partnership with Qnity, and its curriculum includes a foundational personal finance course. Advanced offerings such as hair camps and classes in haircutting, coloring, lash extensions and microblading are available only at certain locations, and are open to licensed cosmetologists, senior students and alumni. The school does not guarantee job placement, but provides career coaching, help building a resume and networking opportunities.

The school keeps classes small and starts students on hands-on work right away, moving from mannequins to supervised work on real clients as they advance.

The Dallas campus is designed to resemble a high-end salon, and the Worcester clinic floor is set up to run like a working salon.
