Chemistry Salon opened in 2019 in a renovated 1940s transmission shop in downtown Berkley. The renovation took ten months and added radiant floor heating, LED lighting, energy-efficient windows, and recycled or repurposed materials throughout the space.

The salon puts education at the center of its team. It holds weekly in-house classes and brings in national and international educators, and it runs a fast-track program for team members. Stylists move through technical levels 1 to 3 and then Technical Director, with foundation, intermediate and advanced training along the way. Level 1 and 2 stylists are licensed cosmetologists working through the salon's masters program. Technical Directors have at least five years on the floor and take part in photoshoots and competitions. Through its partnership with Green Circle Salons, the salon says it recycles more than 95 percent of its waste and is working toward zero waste. It works with cruelty-free, clean and sustainable brands, including Davines, Cult+King and Natulique. Its stated mission is to make beauty meaningful one person at a time, as a sustainable, education-based salon.

A haircut starts with an in-depth consultation and includes a scalp massage, shampoo and conditioning, cut and style. Color and highlight clients who are new to the salon have a consultation first. New color and highlight clients also pay a non-refundable deposit that goes toward their appointment. Cancellations need at least 48 hours' notice and must be made by phone, since email and text are not accepted; late changes and no-shows are charged the price of the reserved service. The salon is open Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 9pm, Friday from 9am to 6pm, and Saturday from 9am to 4pm, and is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Parking is free throughout downtown Berkley.
