Avenue 42 was opened in 2012 and is created by a collective of artists. It has two locations: the Patterson Avenue salon at 5803 Patterson Avenue in Richmond, and the Short Pump location at 2243 Old Brick Rd in Glen Allen. The main line is (804) 625-4242.

Hair services include women's and men's cuts, color such as partial and full highlights and balayage, conditioning treatments, and updo and special occasion styling. Starting prices run from $40 for women's cuts, $30 for men's cuts, $95 for partial highlights, $120 for full highlights, $200 for balayage, and $125 for updos. Extensions start at $600 for an initial install, and maintenance starts at $150 per hour, with hair cost not included. The salon notes that prices depend on the stylist, experience, customization, hair length, density and time required.

For regular styling, there are monthly memberships: The Essential with two blowouts for $125, The Signature with four blowouts for $250, and The Length Society with four blowouts with extensions for $350. Spray tan members can choose The Glow Girl, with two spray tans for $110 a month, or The Glazed Girl, with four for $210 a month.

Beauty services include airbrush and traditional makeup starting at $100, microblading at $500, strip lashes at $25, brow shaping and tint at $60, and waxing for brows, lips and chin, priced from $15 to $30. A virtual consultation with a stylist is available before booking.

Destination weddings can also be arranged in Yucatán, the Outer Banks, Crystal Coast, Savannah, Charleston, Cape Cod, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic and New York City. The salon describes its bridal artists as the best in the area and says the bridal work has earned recognition both locally and nationally. The salon also runs hands-on tutorials and beauty classes, and offers behind-the-scenes access to its artists. Hours are 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Monday, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm from Tuesday through Friday, and 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday. Sundays are by appointment only. Cancellations or changes require at least 48 hours' notice. Changes made 24 to 48 hours ahead are charged 65% of the service total, and changes made less than 24 hours ahead or no-shows are charged the full amount.

Run by a collective of artists, the salon pairs its services with hands-on education through House of 42.
