Alix Waxes operates from inside Forgey Chiropractic on East 22nd Street in Vancouver, in the Uptown area. The studio is run by its owner esthetician, Alix Zimmermann, who has more than a decade of waxing experience behind the business.

The studio says its aim is the least painful and most fun waxing experience it can offer, and it describes itself as a safe space for all. New clients are welcome. Because a first session can feel more nerve-wracking, the esthetician explains what to expect: waxing is quick and the discomfort does not linger.

Services are grouped under brows and waxing. Brow options range from a quick mid brow or tint to combined brow, tint and lip sessions. A Brow Foundations consultation covers longer-term brow goals and ends with a plan and a demonstration of pencil or powder application, and a first-brow appointment is offered for new clients in three options. Waxing covers the face, arms, legs, underarms, torso, back, hands, feet and intimate areas, with full-leg, full-arm and full-body sessions. Intimate service descriptions apply to all genitalia.

Clients are asked to let hair grow about three weeks before a waxing appointment and not to trim it beforehand; if it needs trimming for comfort, the esthetician does it. Maintenance is usually every 4 to 7 weeks, and regrowth typically shows within 7 to 12 days. For the hours after service, clients should avoid strenuous activity, hot tubs and heavy friction. Waxing during a period is allowed if a tampon is brought and the string is left untrimmed. Retinol, other vitamin A derivatives and certain medications such as Accutane are noted as not compatible with waxing, and chemotherapy, chemical peels and extreme sun exposure are listed as contraindications, so any concerns or topical allergies should be shared before service.

Gift cards are sold for future visits or as presents for friends. An email newsletter shares news about the business. The studio is open Tuesday through Saturday, with Sundays and Mondays closed.

The studio aims to make waxing as comfortable and painless as possible, with the first visit explained in advance.
