David Smart, MD

David Smart, MD, is a board-certified dermatologic surgeon and lipedema liposuction surgeon at The Roxbury Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah. He works in the Advanced Lipedema Treatment program and is listed for lipedema surgery. He holds an adjunct faculty post at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Earlier, he was recruited to the University of Utah to direct its cosmetic dermatologic surgery program. There he brought liposuction into the dermatology department as its first dermatologic surgeon to perform it, and he developed the department's tumescent liposuction offerings. According to the site, he was the first in Utah to use Renuvion J-Plasma technology.

His training includes a degree with honors from Brigham Young University, an aesthetic and surgical dermatology fellowship at the Center for Laser and Cosmetic Surgery in New York, and an extensive lipedema liposuction fellowship with Dr. David Amron in Beverly Hills, completed through the Advanced Lipedema Treatment program. He is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and holds a dermatologic surgery subspecialty board certification. He has been a keynote speaker at the Fat Disorders Research Society Conference in Atlanta (2024), the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Annual Meeting in California (2024) and the Lipedema World Congress in Rome (2025). He was featured as an expert analyst in the Wall Street Journal in 2023. His listed works include the 2020 publication Advanced Lipedema Treatment: A Systematic Approach to Lymphatic-Sparing Liposuction.

His practice covers lipedema diagnosis and treatment, advanced liposuction, body contouring, liposculpture, revision liposuction, complex case management and dermatologic surgery procedures. He says lipedema care should address overall well-being as well as physical condition. Alongside other Roxbury Institute surgeons, he takes part in research to advance knowledge of lipedema, including clinical trials and research studies.
