Violet Fury opened in 2020 in a shipping container annex in Oakland, and the studio itself is housed in shipping containers.

The studio was founded by Jodi Ninomiya, a senior colorist who began her career as a color specialist in 1993. Her background includes training with Vidal Sassoon in San Francisco and London, time as Director of Color Services for Architects & Heroes, co-ownership of Dekko, and work as a senior colorist at Harper Paige Salon in San Francisco. She has also educated and mentored other stylists.

Brandie Surnock is a senior stylist who trained at Cowboys and Angels, later became an educator there and spent ten years on its staff. She joined Harper Paige Salon in 2012. Jay Jow is a stylist with training in cosmetology and barbering at Cinta Aveda Institute, and a background in interior architecture and architecture that shapes how she approaches a cut.

Retail offerings include Hairstory and Mr. Smith Reverie products. Clients who book and then do not arrive are charged 50% of the booked service fee.

The studio favors long-term client relationships and color that is planned to change as a client's hair and preferences change over time.
