About

Topnotch Naturals began as Locsbycookie, a side business developed in 2018 in the owner's basement in Belleville as a hobby. The business later opened a salon in Belleville and took its current name.

Sisterlocks are small, shapeable locs built from root to end with a patented interlocking technique. The method was created nearly 30 years ago by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell, and the salon notes that it should only be installed by certified, professionally trained consultants. According to the site, the method uses no chemicals and avoids excessive tightening.

A visit starts with a mandatory consultation, which costs $60, is non-refundable and goes toward services. The consultation lets the stylist look at the hair and scalp and set pricing. Clients who book the three-visit installation package pay a $200 non-refundable deposit once the date is agreed, and the package is listed at $800. It includes the consultation, a locking session that often runs 10 to 20 hours or longer, and the first retightening. A follow-up visit is scheduled 3 to 4 weeks after installation, and retightens are generally completed every 4 to 6 weeks. Retightening is priced at $60 per hour, or $180 for the first three hours and $40 per hour after that.

Interlocks are offered as a maintenance service for existing locs. They tighten new growth to the scalp and can be done by hand, with a tool or with a latch hook, and usually last from 6 weeks to 3 months depending on how quickly the hair grows. The salon has a friendly, welcoming feel with relaxing chairs.

The salon follows the Sisterlocks method, with installation limited to certified consultants. The site says interlocking does not thin locs and helps keep them a consistent size.
