The Organic Salon

Find the salon on the corner of Westport Road and Wyoming Street, housed in a black brick building that has a door set on the corner. Nearby landmarks include I-35, Country Club Plaza and Brookside. Parking is free, either in the shared lot at the rear or on the street out front. Visits are by appointment only, Tuesday through Saturday; the salon is shut on Sundays and Mondays. The salon describes its atmosphere as relaxed and calm, with little background noise. Guests are offered drinks and snacks while they wait or during processing time.

The salon says it aims to be an inclusive place, free from judgment, that celebrates every hair texture. It describes its products as responsibly sourced and says it avoids ammonia and resorcinol in hair color, and parabens, sulfates, silicones and artificial fragrance in its other products. Its products are described as cruelty-free, non-toxic and sustainable, and most are gluten-free and vegan. The color line used, Organic Colour Systems, is described by the brand as B-Corp certified and PETA certified.

Every appointment ends with full styling, either a blow out or a hand-styled look, along with product suggestions for home. A new client haircut is an hour and includes a consultation, shampoo, cut and style. The curly haircut is a two-hour appointment for new clients with wavy to curly hair who wear it natural most of the time or want to. It includes a dry cut, a detox step, shampoo, a curl set and moisture balancing. New clients booking color receive a color consultation form beforehand. A new client color session takes about two hours and does not include a haircut. Vivid color requires a consultation first, after which the stylist gives a formal estimate of time and cost. The scalp facial is a stand-alone 90-minute service.

Pricing is charged hourly based on total time, and rates are set individually by each stylist. Prices exclude gratuity, and the salon says it hopes to move toward eliminating tipping over time. The salon is otherwise cashless and accepts credit or debit cards and Venmo. New clients must keep a credit card on file. Cancellations and reschedules need at least 24 hours notice, and late cancellations or no-shows are charged. Arriving more than a third of the way through the appointment time late may lead to rescheduling. Children are asked not to attend appointments, with an exception for babies under six months. Gift cards are available.

The salon works from the idea that hair should be cared for in a way that suits each person, with responsibly sourced products and a practice of avoiding certain harsh ingredients in color and everyday care.
