The Mod Labb was founded on October 1, 2013, by Jessica Tafoya, who started with two employees in a 400 sq. ft. suite. The business has since grown into this Arlington location and includes a sister company, The Body Labb, along with the education platform The Mod Academy.

Booking is done online or by phone. Online bookings require a credit card to hold the appointment. First-time color clients pay a $50 deposit at booking, taken by phone with card consent; the deposit is non-refundable but is deducted from the total at checkout on the service day, and it can be kept as credit for a future visit or applied toward any product sold at the salon. The salon phones clients a week ahead and texts two days before, and appointments that are not confirmed are cancelled. Cancellations need 48 hours' notice, with late cancellations charged 50% of the service price. There is a 15-minute grace period, and arriving later can result in a charge of 50% of the service price.

The Mod Academy is located inside the salon and includes a classroom, a six-station demonstration and practice area, and the salon floor itself for technical theory days. The Mod Method is a 10-week advanced workshop for licensed stylists, held three times a week in an active salon and offered three times a year. The salon states that the academy's purpose is to build confident leaders and grow commission-based salons through hands-on training, mentorship and business development.

Extensions include hand-tied and tape-in installs, maintenance, and hair tinsels in a range of colors, with a free 30-minute extensions consultation.
