The salon was established in 1993 under the name Metropolis Hair Fashions and now operates as The Metropolis. Scott Stuart has owned the business since it opened and has led the team throughout, with the aim of a calm, professional space where the individual guest comes first and clients return over the long term.

Every visit can begin with a complimentary consultation, where the team talks through skin tone, eye color and daily lifestyle before recommending a look. Extensive color work is quoted after that consultation rather than priced from a list. Monday hours vary, so guests are asked to call, Tuesday through Saturday has set hours, and the salon is closed on Sundays.

The salon hosts PROseminars, continuing education events for hairdressers, which it has run since 1994 and which have included more than 50 educational sessions. Stylists have also been trained to recognize signs of domestic violence.

The salon describes itself as offering the highest quality service and expertise in the Knoxville area. According to the salon, CityView Magazine readers named it Best of the Best in several years, CityView recognized it again in 2019 and 2020, and it won a 2019 Salon Today makeover contest. Each guest is given a consultation so the chosen look fits their skin tone, eyes and lifestyle rather than a standard template.
