About

The Hair Apothecary is a small, locally owned business run by its owner and stylist, Fiona Nagy. The studio describes its approach as offering an experience rather than only a service. Consultations are free for new and existing clients and last 15 minutes. New clients first fill out a questionnaire covering hair history, home care, hair condition, goals and allergies, and the owner then phones to arrange the appointment. The studio does not take online bookings.

A visit can include a complimentary scalp massage whenever a service includes a shampoo, and guests may ask for music or dimmed lights. Guests who prefer a quiet appointment can request a Tranquility Appointment, where conversation is kept to the initial consultation. Closed bottles and tumblers with sealable lids are welcome in the studio, and snacks may be allowed for some appointments.

The salon describes itself as a Certified Sustainable Salon and says it recycles up to 95% of the waste produced during each service through a partnership with Green Circle Salons. A $2.00 Environmental Stewardship Fee is added to every service to fund that recycling program. The owner hand-picked the products to fit the salon's sustainability goals. The studio says it places health and safety first, including cleaning and disinfecting the space. Its Artisan Wall sells locally made goods, currently including resin necklaces from Black Pillar Jewelry and pet-themed stickers and pins from Noodle Horse Doodles. Clients pay those artists directly through Venmo or PayPal, and the salon takes no commission.

Clients who cancel or move an appointment with less than 48 hours' notice pay a 50% service fee. Deposit-backed specialty color appointments require 7 days' notice, or the deposit is kept. The cancellation charge is waived when the client or a member of their household is sick; other personal emergencies are considered one at a time. If a client arrives late, they may get a shortened service and still owe the full price, and a 50% fee can apply when no service is possible. Missed appointments without notice incur a 50% service fee, and the salon may ask for a deposit before accepting future bookings. Appointments placed outside regular working hours carry an out-of-hours surcharge. Within a week of a visit, clients can email to request a free redo or account credit, and each request is judged individually. Corrective color work does not qualify for free redos, nor do other specialty services of that kind.

Focuses on providing an experience rather than only a service, with each guest's appointment built around their needs and starting from a consultation.
