About

The first Soon Beauty Lab was founded by Melissa Soon in 1999 in the East Village. A Carroll Gardens location followed in 2011, co-opened with Ryan Hoch, and the business now also has a site in Fort Greene. According to the salon, many of its early clients moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn and kept visiting the owners.

The salon says it wants a visit to feel personal, built on real listening, real skill and stylists who care how clients look and feel when they leave. It describes its approach as the reverse of intimidating, pretentious or impersonal, and it aims to be a comfortable place where stylists can keep growing. Stylists are described as good listeners who combine each client's concerns with their own creativity and technical skill, and the work is described as blending artistic expression with precision haircutting.

Booking is available online through the website or the SBL booking app at both locations, and Carroll Gardens and Fort Greene keep different hours. Color prices are starting points that can shift with hair length, thickness, previous color history and time between visits. Appointments need a credit card on file to hold a spot, and cancellations or reschedules need at least 24 hours notice. Children are welcome by appointment only.

The salon uses Kevin Murphy color and hair care products throughout, and it offers its own KM Gloss, which is made with plant proteins and ingredients the salon describes as gentle and environmentally friendly. It partners with Green Circle Salons to recycle salon waste, including hair, and uses VISH software to track and reduce color and chemical waste. Training is handled in-house through an apprentice program led by Melissa Soon and a team of educators, open to stylists with temporary or permanent licenses, which combines 25 years of salon experience with a structured curriculum. The salon also lists openings for experienced stylists through its website.

The salon's philosophy centers on listening closely to each client, then pairing that with creativity and technical skill. It also places weight on personal service and on giving its own stylists room to keep growing.

The salon describes its feel as relaxed and personal, the opposite of intimidating or impersonal.
