Sobel Skin is located at Park Avenue and East 82nd Street, near Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Yorkville and Lenox Hill neighborhoods. Dr. Howard Sobel founded the practice, which says it has been building relationships with Upper East Side clients and others for more than 20 years. The office is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9AM to 5PM, and Tuesday and Thursday from 9AM to 7PM. It is closed on Sundays. The practice says it was part of the early days of the medspa movement in the United States.
The practice pairs a medical facility with a relaxed, immersive spa setting, and describes its facility as state of the art. It says it aims for a high-end experience that feels inclusive and familiar. Every client begins with a consultation to discuss goals and needs. Botox is not used during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or for people with an autoimmune disease, and the site notes there is no minimum or maximum age for treatment. Minors under 18 must have a consultation with Dr. Sobel before receiving any spa services.
Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia in the practice's own operating room, which the site says is accredited by the AAAHC, rather than in a hospital. The tumescent method uses an injection of saline, local anesthetic and adrenaline before fat is removed by suction-assisted or ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy. It targets areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, upper arms and neck that have not responded to diet and exercise, and it is not a weight-loss procedure; the site notes patients typically lose two to five pounds of fat. Fees start at $3,500 for a small area such as the neck and at $4,000 for larger areas, and may be adjusted for several areas in one day. Most patients need medical clearance and blood tests from their primary doctor first, and a compression garment is often worn for two to three weeks afterward. Possible side effects listed include temporary swelling, bruising, soreness, numbness, minor scarring, and baggy or rippling skin.
The facial menu includes a 55-minute Basic European Facial with skin analysis, steam, massage and a custom mask, a Sensitive Skin Facial for easily irritated skin, an Acne Facial with deep-pore cleansing for pre-teens, teens and anyone with oily, problem skin, and a Hydrafacial for all skin types. A 30-minute glycolic facial peel can be booked alone or added to a basic facial. Body spa services include post-liposuction lymphatic massage, an anti-aging glycolic treatment for hands and feet, and microdermabrasion. A private dressing area with a robe, slippers and hair dryer is available after body treatments. Clients are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for consultations and appointments to complete paperwork. Rescheduling without a fee requires at least 24 hours' notice, and a $150 fee may apply to spa appointments cancelled on shorter notice. The practice does not accept health insurance.
The skincare line Sobel Skin Rx launched in 2020 and is sold on Sephora.com and at drsobelskinrx.com; the business says it uses a patent-pending delivery system and offers a complete line for every skin type. Dr. Sobel also founded HDS Cosmetics Lab in 1991, which produces Doctors Dermatologic Formula; that formula was later acquired by Procter & Gamble in 2007 and by Luxe Brands in 2014. Gift certificates can be bought in any denomination, in person or by phone. Referral credits go to the Lifestyle Palette Membership Program account for spa treatments and products.
Treatment plans are individualized and begin with a consultation that assesses goals. The practice states its values as honesty, a human approach, and openness to new techniques.
A medical practice set within a relaxed, immersive spa environment.
