Serrato Style

Serrato Style is a hair salon on the third floor of the Salons By JC building on East 59th Street in Manhattan. Steven Serrato founded the business, which has operated since 2016, and it focuses on curly, wavy and textured hair. The salon describes itself as inclusive, says it serves women, men and children, and says its clients include locals from the Bronx as well as visitors from Trinidad, Mexico City and Belgium.

Visits are by appointment only, and walk-ins are not accepted. The salon recommends setting aside at least two hours for a hair service. Booking opens on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. Eastern for the following month, and a 50% deposit is needed to hold a time. Deposits are refundable for cancellations made at least 48 hours ahead and non-refundable after that. A 15-minute grace period applies, after which a $50 late fee is charged. The salon is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The haircut is priced at $335 plus tax, which comes to $350.08 on the booking site with NYC sales tax, and includes a wash, styling, drying and refinement of the cut. Wash N Style is priced at $145 plus tax, or $151.52 on the booking site, and includes two or more washes, a conditioning treatment, gentle detangling, professional drying and a styling finish. Treatments can be added to any service at booking: an Olaplex treatment at $85 plus tax, a scalp treatment at $85 plus tax for buildup, and a moisture treatment at $65 plus tax for very dry hair. Hair prep guidelines ask clients to wash their hair at least 48 hours ahead, arrive with hair down and completely dry, and avoid pulling hair back or styling it in twists, braids or up-dos. A $50 hair prep fee applies if these guidelines are not followed. The salon does not remove braids or twists.

Steven Serrato leads in-person classes for professional stylists on coily and highly textured hair, held in Midtown Manhattan with no more than four stylists per session. The classes cover consultation, clarifying and deep conditioning, styling and drying, and refining the cut, and cost $600 per stylist. Stylists must hold a cosmetologist license and have at least three years of professional experience to attend. Private education is also available for travel, private classes and salon partnerships.

Payment is accepted by major credit cards and cash, with tips accepted in cash only. Gift cards for haircuts are sold through the booking site. Clients are asked not to call; questions and bookings go through the online form or direct message.
