Apprentices are paired with a master stylist mentor and paid through an apprenticeship lasting six months to a year. The salon says 90% of its Master Stylists began as apprentices here. Stylists are paid on commission with room to move up, and full-time staff receive health and dental insurance, a 401(k), paid vacation, flexible scheduling, employee and family discounts and annual team events. The salon also says its staff turnover is low.

Every service begins with a consultation, where the stylist goes over the service and products first. Each stylist offers a free consultation for an exact quote. Quoted prices are starting-at figures and can rise with the complexity, length or texture of the hair. Prices differ by stylist level, which reflects expertise, education and skill; a plus sign on the price list marks this. Color changes and corrections are estimated, and some take more than one visit. Appointments are recommended and most services can be booked online, though VoMor extensions cannot. Every booking requires a credit card hold, cancellations or changes made less than 24 hours ahead are charged half the service price, and arriving late can shorten a service. Spa appointments call for arriving 15 minutes early. Children under 12 are not allowed in the spa. Group events such as birthday and bridal parties are arranged through the store manager, and group cancellations need 72 hours' notice. Ultraceutical Signature Facials are also offered. Gratuities are not included in prices. Cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are accepted, but personal checks are not.

The salon says it has raised more than $100,000 for the James River Association through Earth Month and its ongoing efforts. At checkout, guests can round their total up to the nearest dollar, with the full amount going to the association. The salon also says it does community service work with Richmond's unhoused population and raises funds for the March of Dimes.

Built around Aveda products and a focus on individual guest care, with staff greeting guests by name. Education is treated as ongoing, with in-house experts and outside industry leaders contributing.
