About

Portland Beauty Academy has offered beauty education for more than two decades. It is licensed through the Oregon Department of Education as a Competency-Based Cosmetology School, which lets students move forward at their own pace rather than meeting fixed hour requirements. The school describes its goal as helping students build successful careers as entrepreneurs in the beauty industry, and it says it has thousands of graduates.

Training covers four programs. Hair design includes cutting, coloring, chemical texture services, wigs and hairpieces, extensions, anatomy, infection control, the basics of electricity and chemistry, and salon business, with coursework modeled on the Milady's Standard Cosmetology textbook. Core classroom training runs 7 to 12 weeks before clinic floor work begins. Nail technology covers manicures, pedicures, artificial nail enhancement, hand and foot massage, nail diseases and Oregon law, and students may graduate after core requirements or continue on the clinic floor for up to 600 hours. Esthetics covers facial massage, facial and body waxing, makeup application, skin structure and skin diseases, and the core program takes 8 to 14 weeks, with a two-days-a-week option over eight weeks. Massage therapy covers anatomy, kinesiology, hydrotherapy, pathology, professional ethics and business and law, and is approved by the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists.

Students practice on real clients in the on-site clinic salon, so guests receive services from students after core classroom training. Clinic services are priced as a menu, with many hair, nail, facial and waxing options listed in the service categories. Students who train in both esthetics and massage can complete dual certification in both fields.

Enrollment can be full-time or part-time, with day and night classes. The school offers several payment routes, including Hearth financing for all programs, Credee payment plans for applicants not approved by Hearth, Climb Credit financing that requires a 25% self pay on some plans, Meritize financing for the massage therapy program, and in-house financing. Financial aid is available to qualifying students, and eligible military spouses may receive assistance for education and training.

Students learn core skills in the classroom first, then build experience by serving real clients in the on-site clinic salon.
