Natural State is run by owners Coette and Brianna. Coette is a licensed educator with more than 20 years in the industry who keeps the salon's teaching side going. Brianna has 10 years of experience and is known for free-form curly cutting. Coette developed The Art of Hair, a four-day program for Germantown Friends Academy students that was held at the salon during a January term.

Hair services carry a two-week, no-charge guarantee from the appointment date. Lightening prices include product use, and extra bowls for density or length add $10. Between appointments, clients can ask for guidance on products, techniques and how often to wash natural hair.

The Bungalow, next door, offers make-up, massage, sugaring and facials. Full body sugaring is done privately in its small space.

Workshops are held in the studio or online over Zoom, with groups of 1 to 12 people. Topics include a hot-tool styling class, a make-up class, a virtual hair cleanup class and a class on wet-to-dry curl technique.

Builds each visit around the client's hair history and goals, and the services menu is not split by gender.

The salon describes itself as a safe, welcoming space for the community.
