Native Studio Salon

Selina McManus founded Native Studio Salon in 2021 and runs it as a collective where independent artists work behind their own chairs. Each stylist sets their own schedule, booking system, service menu and policies, so clients book directly with the stylist they choose.

The studio occupies a private warehouse in historical West Oakland, in the Lower Bottoms and Prescott area. The neighborhood is residential, so parking is free but arriving early is recommended. Beverages and light snacks are offered, and robes are available for clients who need to change.

Appointments are required, as walk-ins are not accepted. Same-day requests can be sent by calling or texting 510-816-0478, and the team passes them on to stylists. Management is typically in the salon Tuesday through Friday. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and each stylist decides whether they take child clients. Clients are asked to come to appointments without extra guests.

The salon describes its space as welcoming to all hair textures and all people, and it states zero tolerance for racism, sexism and homophobia.

Each stylist runs their own bookings, menu and policies within a shared creative space open to all hair textures.
