Michael & Michael is on the south side of West Chicago Avenue, about eight blocks west of Michigan Avenue and a short walk from the Brown Line's Chicago Avenue stop. It has operated for more than 20 years. Co-founders Michael Crowley and Michael Jacobson opened it, and the salon was redesigned in late 2015 by Ellen M. Mills of EMM Architecture + Design together with the founders. The space is about 4,400 square feet, joins an original 1885 storefront with an adjacent 1915 storefront, and has seven skylights.

Cuts and styling cover women's and men's cuts, blowdries and upstyles, starting at $100 for a women's cut, $80 for a men's cut, $85 for a blowdry and $250 for an upstyle. Color includes single process color from $90, highlights and balayage from $175 each, and custom color priced after a consultation. Extensions come in Habit Method hand-tied and Halocouture original and tape-in styles, with pricing set at a complimentary consultation that must be booked ahead. Treatments range from a deep conditioning mask from $30 to Keratin Classic and Brazilian smoothing from $425, with relaxers from $150 and Milbon Gold treatments from $125.

Booking is by phone at 312.951.0779, Tuesday through Friday 9am to 7pm and Saturday 9am to 5pm; the salon is closed Sunday and Monday. A credit card is required to book all appointments, and cancellations or date changes need at least 24 hours notice to avoid a full charge. Keratin and relaxing services need 7 days notice to avoid forfeiting the deposit. Color does not include a blowdry, so one must be booked at the same time. A self-dry station with dryers, brushes and styling products is available for clients who skip the blowdry. Valet parking is offered; allow 15 minutes before and after the visit. Children under 7 are not served, children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and animals are not allowed except service dogs. Tipping is optional and staff accept tips in cash only.

The team includes stylists, colorists, apprentices, and management and client services staff. The salon says its creative team completed its in-house training program, which focuses on advanced technique and hair health. Apprenticeship has been central to the salon's approach since it opened, and applicants can email a resume and brief letter to info@michaelandmichael.com or use the form on the apprentice program page.

The salon describes itself as award-winning and as the best hair salon in Chicago. According to the salon, it received a 2016 NAHA award for salon design in North America, was named a 2016 Salon of the Year by Salon Today magazine, was included among the best salon designs worldwide by Canadian Salon magazine, and received the Grand Prize for Cutting Edge Design from Takara Belmont.
