The spa describes its mission as offering the Oakland community affordable wellness services and new ways to relax and heal the body through technology-based treatments. It calls itself the cleanest float spa in Oakland.
Float sessions take place in fully private rooms, where guests float nude in a tank of magnesium sulfate salt water held at body temperature with minimal sensory input. Guests shower in the in-room shower before floating and may shower again afterward to remove the salt. Towels, robes, earplugs and body wash or shampoo are provided. Tanks are Evolution Float Pods with a bench seat and anti-slip floor, or Quest Float Suites with in-tank heaters inside soundproof rooms. Tank doors have no latches, and the water is filtered between floats and treated with UV light.
Whole body cryotherapy exposes guests to very cold temperatures for about three minutes, which the spa lists as ranging from -180 to -245 degrees. Clients must enter completely dry, remove all jewelry, and change into a provided robe, dry socks with slippers, gloves and underwear. The Pro Cocoon Sauna is a single-person pod with dry or infrared heat, a contoured massage bed, cool airflow and aromatherapy, and the spa says a 30-minute session can help muscles relax and may improve sleep. Sauna sessions do not include a shower, and guests who want one must tell the front desk and pay an extra fee.
Members pay lower prices than standard rates, and membership and package options are available by phone or in person. Listed prices exclude a $5 service charge for amenities, cleaning and card fees, which is waived for cash. Gift cards are offered. Reservations can be made by phone at +1 (510) 607-8930 or by email at reservations@kumefloat.com, and the spa is open Monday through Sunday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Calls may be recorded for quality assurance and training.
The spa is not on a direct bus route. AC Transit Line 18 runs from University Village in Albany toward downtown Oakland, and El Cerrito Plaza BART serves northern Albany. From the 19th St. Oakland BART station, the spa is reached via Grand Avenue.
Kume Float presents its services as technology-based wellness, with floating, cold treatments, heat and light intended to support relaxation, stress relief, recovery and sleep, according to the spa.
Float rooms are fully private, and the Quest suites sit in soundproof rooms.
