Katy Ryan Studios was launched in 2015 by owner Katy Ryan to give people a comfortable place to talk about their hair needs. The studio says its focus is the individual client, with no rushed visits and no passing clients between several stylists, and it describes itself as different from assembly-line salons.

Each appointment begins with a conversation about the client's hair, daily life and upkeep. Haircuts include dry cuts, usually done on dry hair so movement and texture can be seen, which the owner often uses to shape curly or wavy hair for texture, movement and face shape. Razor cuts are offered for certain hair types and textures and for shorter styles, and men's cuts are finished with a buzzer and razor. Color ranges from single process and face-framing highlights to foil and balayage highlights, babylights, double process and gloss, while creative color and color correction are priced after a consultation. Consultations are free.

Keratin and smoothing options include Cezanne and Lasio treatments. The Cezanne Keratin Smoothing Treatment is formaldehyde-free and lasts up to five months on average, and the Cezanne Instant Frizz Eliminator lasts up to six weeks from haircut to haircut. Lasio Keratin Treatments come in Tropic, Mocha Silk and One-Day formulas and last two to four months. Mocha Silk and One-Day contain 0.02% formaldehyde, while Tropic does not but contains a similar preservative. A hairline keratin spot treatment is also available, and the owner guides clients toward the treatment that suits their texture and goals.

The studio has served New York City since 2015 and began serving Woodland Park, Colorado in 2024, with Buena Vista, Colorado listed as upcoming. Prospective clients outside these locations can email to ask whether the owner will work in their area. Bookings and questions go through email or the online booking site, as phone calls for service requests are not accepted. Bridal hair and makeup is priced after a consultation.
