HAIRLOKS by ARLETTE was founded in 1996. The business opened in Scottsdale, Arizona, after founder Arlette Pender moved there from New York in June 2005. The salon's work centers on natural hair, including loks, braids, twists, weaving and hair care.

About

The salon says it puts each client's needs first and offers personal, private service with open communication between client and stylist. Because the salon is appointment only, new clients are asked to book a consultation before they can schedule services. The consultation fee is $30, based on the service desired, and it covers an approximate price, the salon's history, a portfolio review and a stylist bio. Clients may bring photos of styles they like. If a service is booked the same day as the consultation, the fee is taken off the service balance.

Visitors are asked to arrive 10 minutes early and to set aside at least four to six hours for appointments. Full payment is due up front for installation services such as weaves, crochet installs and braids, and other balances are due at the end of the visit. Prices listed are starting prices that may change with hair length and density, and current prices are posted on Vagaro under the Services tab. Cancellations need at least 24 hours' notice, a current credit card must be on file to hold an appointment, and appointments running 15 minutes or more late may be rescheduled.

Beyond the salon, it sells Hair Adornments by Arlette, which are human hair pieces that clip onto locks or natural hair, along with a scented candle called My Hair is Beautiful and other natural beauty and self-care products. The salon also runs Curlyloks workshops that teach mothers how to wash, comb, treat and style the hair of African American and bi-racial children through hands-on instruction. Workshop payments can be made online by credit card through PayPal.

The salon focuses on customer needs, personal and private service, and clear communication between client and stylist, and says it uses natural products in the salon.
