Grow Salon opened in 2006 as an eco-friendly workplace and sits just north of Market Street in downtown Ballard. It has been Green Circle certified since 2012, and the salon says it was one of the first salons in North America to earn that certification. It describes itself as a leader in sustainable beauty.

Sustainability shapes the daily routine as well as the brand. The salon recycles roughly 90 to 95 percent of its used materials each day, and it partners with manufacturers that conserve water and energy during production. Products are made with sustainably grown ingredients and come in biodegradable, reusable or post-consumer packaging.

The salon's approach to hair centers on bringing out each client's natural look while keeping hair as healthy as possible. Haircut visits begin with the stylist listening to the client's concerns and preferences. Color services include single color, foil highlights, which add contrast against the base color to frame the face, and balayage, a freehand technique in which the stylist paints highlights by hand for a soft, natural result. Foil typically needs more frequent touchups, while balayage is designed to be easier to maintain as hair grows out. Specialty color is priced through a custom inquiry, and starting prices can shift with hair length, density and add-ons. Prices reflect each stylist's experience and training.

New clients are asked to call (206) 297-6385 to book a first appointment. Appointments can be moved when needed. Cancellations made within 24 hours of an appointment, and missed appointments, are subject to a fee. Services are guaranteed, and adjustments are offered within two weeks of the original service. The salon is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 8:00 and Saturday to Sunday from 9:00 to 7:00. Two commercial parking spaces are available in the garage on a first-come, first-served basis, and free street parking is available nearby.

The salon is hiring motivated stylists and offers competitive wages, a flexible schedule, training and benefits. It also runs an apprenticeship tailored to each employee, in which apprentices learn by working directly with the owner and the full team.
