Flipp Opened in 2011 after its first client appointment on February 1 of that year. Jo-Anna Cassino founded it with the aim of a safe, non-toxic space for the community and for local artists. The salon was planned around herbalist principles and includes an apothecary area stocked with loose herbs, blended teas, carrier oils and butters, and botanically based hair and skin care.

The salon works as a collective. Each stylist is independent and sets their own prices and the services they offer, and the team chooses a single all-inclusive service menu together. The salon describes itself as a tip-free business: tipping is not expected for any service, and the price shown is the price paid.

Services run from maintenance cuts to larger transformations, lived-in blondes and vivid color. Clients can book online through Fresha, which shows each stylist's open times, or by calling the salon. You can request a specific stylist, book a complimentary consultation first, or call; voicemails are returned by the end of the same day. Stylists see clients aged 16 and older, and the salon does not offer services for young children.

Every first-time color client, and anyone who has not had color at Flipp in nine months or more, needs a complimentary in-person consultation before a color service. A credit card is required at booking to hold the appointment, but it is not charged. Cancellations with less than 48 hours notice are charged 50% of the missed appointment's value, and no-shows or cancellations with less than 24 hours notice are charged the full value.

The walls and retail area show work by local artists and artisans, and the apothecary changes its selection each season with a focus on local makers. Flipp by Night, a live music series, has been held at the salon since 2013, and ticket and merchandise money from it goes to the performers. Community tea gatherings are now held at Botanic Providence, a short walk away at 105 Wickenden Street. The salon also runs annual clothing swaps and volunteer days at its farm and supports organizations focused on environmental stewardship and community well-being.
