Fabulocs began with one stylist and has since brought on more than one hundred stylists, according to a company blog post. Its founder and CEO, Nimat Bilal-Young, created the product line and earlier opened five salons across the D.C., Maryland and Virginia area, hiring and training women in each.

The salon serves natural women and men of all ages. Styles run from funky and exotic to conservative and professional. Loc services cover maintenance, interlocking, micro locs, repairs, cuts and pin-ups, with separate services for kids. Protective styles, loose natural styles and extensions are also offered, and extension prices do not include hair.

Appointments are required and the salon is open seven days a week. Clients can book by text at the main number. Consultations come in three forms: a free basic consultation with a service, by phone or online; a $35 in-house basic consultation without a service, covering style selection, hair and scalp analysis and product recommendations; and a $150 master consultation with the owner, in house or by webinar, which includes hair type and scalp analysis, a product demonstration, goal setting and a customized product kit. A product consultation is free and starts with an intake form.

Stylists work as independent contractors. They are chosen for experience, personality and a commitment to service, and must be evaluated, tested and have prior training before working with the business. The salon says it focuses hiring on women who need flexible hours and extra income, though it hires others as well.

A free Stylist Development Mentorship runs 18 to 24 months with an experienced executive stylist and may lead to job offers. Applicants must be 18 to 25, currently employed and available on Fridays, Saturdays and some Sundays, and must be able to do beginner-level two-strand twists, cornrows, flat twists and loc retwists. A short video introduces their background and goals. A free 15-month apprenticeship with a weekly clinic, typically on Sundays, is open to stylists who contract with Fabulocs or complete the mentorship, and monthly training reports are submitted to the Maryland Board of Cosmetology. Employment may follow apprenticeship, typically at four to six months.

Built around natural hair care using products designed for dry-prone hair and locs, with consultations ahead of services and regular professional maintenance recommended between visits.
