Center Stage opened in summer 1982, founded by Paula Welsh with help from her sisters Bobbie Cooper and Brenda Taylor. It began with several barbers and one stylist and has grown into a larger staff. The salon is still family owned and managed.

The salon describes its mission as custom service, a friendly team and good hair care. It also describes itself as a complete salon that looks after hair, health and well-being, and it hosts health-related workshops and seminars as well as other events for up to 100 people. A community giving program called the Angel Network is part of the business.
The salon is on Lakeshore Avenue near Lake Merritt, just off Highway 580 at the foot of the Oakland Hills, with plenty of street parking nearby. The salon states that its staff are licensed stylists and barbers. Free hair consultations are offered, and twists, braids, dreads and coils require a consultation first. Early and late appointments can be arranged on request. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
Services cover women's hair and beauty work, men's haircuts and texturizing, children's haircuts under the Kids Kuts name, hair replacement for cancer patients, cosmetic hair enhancement, wedding parties, and makeup artist services for stage and on-site work. The salon uses 100% human hair weaves and professional temporary and permanent hair color.
