Altered Ego Salon opened in Tempe in 1983 as Sylvia's Hair Corral, founded by Bill and Sylvia Hensley at McClintock and Baseline. In 2002 it moved to Mill Towne Center under owner Tawni Bare and took its current name. The salon describes itself as family-run, with a focus on helping guests feel confident in their look.

Over the years the business has grown beyond the styling chairs. It opened Solo Café in 2007, started Lil Ego's, an in-salon daycare, in 2010, and turned the café into a hybrid coffee shop and barbershop in 2013, which ran until 2018. The company has operated under Summit Salon Business concepts since 2011, and in 2018 the focus shifted toward salon education.

Education remains central to the salon. Stylists regularly attend in-person and virtual classes, the team aims to keep up with trends, color technology and products, and guests are taught how to recreate their looks at home. The salon also holds in-salon educational events called Ego System Education.

Services span color, haircuts, styling, treatments and extensions. Most prices vary by stylist and by the product used. Haircuts include a shampoo, scalp massage and style, and online booking includes digital consultations and service history tracking. Extension clients begin with a consultation, and the LOHR process covers personalized installation, a custom cut and style, and ongoing move-ups and check-ins. Extension hair must be purchased before ordering and is non-returnable.
