Facial plastic surgeon John Vartanian practices at the Glendale office of John Vartanian MD, where more than 20 years have gone into surgery limited to the face and neck. He holds double board certification in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery and in otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. According to the site, he has performed thousands of operations, with rhinoplasty and the aging face as his main focus.
He completed a general surgery internship and a head and neck surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, training under Drs. Eugene Tardy, Dean Toriumi and Gary Burget. His facial plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship took place at the Lasky Clinic in Beverly Hills with Dr. Frank Kamer, one of a small number of fellowships approved by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He earned a B.S. in biology from the University of California, Irvine, and a medical degree with honors plus a master's in physiology from Chicago Medical School. He has further training in laser and non-surgical cosmetic techniques. According to the site, he received an Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award and several research grants, and during residency he won the Resident Research Award twice and a patient care commendation.
He is an assistant clinical professor at UCLA and a clinical instructor at USC, teaching physicians at both the UCLA and USC medical centers. For three years he shared teaching of an advanced nasal diagnosis class held during the yearly meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. He also built a virtual reality model of nasal anatomy now used in physician training. He has lectured across the country, published in the scientific literature and appeared in the media. As a co-investigator on FDA studies of aesthetic injectables, including Juvederm, he has contributed to research on several injectable products. He gives pro bono complex reconstructive surgery to underserved patients at West-LA VA/UCLA and LA County-USC Medical Centers.
His surgical work includes rhinoplasty in revision, ethnic, functional and preservation forms, along with septoplasty. His facelift options are the full, mini, cheek, V lift and neck lift, and he also performs revision facelifts to correct results that did not turn out as hoped. Other procedures include endoscopic brow lift with Endotine forehead fixation, blepharoplasty, facial and neck micro-liposuction, facial fat injections, and facial reconstruction such as flap techniques after Mohs surgery or lesion removal.
On the non-surgical side he places fillers under the eyes, for lip augmentation and for the liquid facelift, and has performed over 1000 under-eye injections. He uses Belotero Balance for superficial lines, Restylane-L and Restylane Silk, and favors the lidocaine-containing XC version of Juvederm. He also gives BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport and Xeomin, as well as non-cosmetic BOTOX for migraines, hyperhidrosis and TMJ issues. Patients travel from Glendale, Burbank and farther afield for subtle, refined changes rather than a different look.
