Velvaere Mae is the third salon opened by founder Tiffany Wheelhouse, who has worked in health and beauty for about 20 years, in Twin Cities salons and in Boulder, Colorado. In 2016 she left her salon to work independently in a rental salon in downtown Minneapolis, and during that period she also taught group fitness at a studio in Northeast Minneapolis. The Eagan location was opened at the invitation of MV Ventures and is a sister salon to Meraki Hair Lounge, a rental salon in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The name comes from a Norse word for well-being.

Stylists here get some practical support beyond their chair. They attend quarterly wellness clinics focused on nervous system regulation and have access to stocked backbar and retail brands. Renters receive their first two weeks free, a 10-week maternity leave, and one year of free coaching.
Because there is no front desk, each stylist runs their own booking, and appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Walk-ins and same-day appointments are not accepted. New clients complete an intake form so the salon can recommend a suitable stylist. Clients text their stylist directly, and general questions go to the salon by email. The salon says that removing the front desk strengthens the relationship between clients and their stylists.
The salon is open Monday to Friday 9AM to 7PM and Saturday 9AM to 4PM, and is closed Sunday. Reiki treatments are offered alongside the hair services, and apprentice stylists in training offer hair services at a discounted rate.
Stylist wellbeing comes first, with the salon framing its focus as balance across body, mind and spirit.
