Upscale Sugar and Wax Studio is a Tacoma studio focused on hair removal, skin care, lashes and brows. Sugaring and waxing cover the face, underarms, legs, arms, back, chest and the bikini area, with full Brazilian and full body options and separate men's menu items. Walk-ins may be accepted depending on availability, so booking ahead is the surer option.

About

Sugaring uses a paste made mainly from sugar, water and lemon juice. The paste goes on warm rather than hot, is pressed against the direction of growth and is lifted with it. The studio says the lower temperature carries less risk of burns than wax and often feels less painful because hair comes out with the grain. The same paste can often be reused on nearby areas during one visit. For waxing, hair should be about a quarter inch long for the wax to grip, and clients are asked to avoid sun, tanning beds and hot showers for 24 hours afterward. Waxing is not recommended on sunburned skin or right after a tanning treatment. Guests who are unhappy with a waxing service can contact the studio within 24 hours for a free correction or re-do. New guests must book a first-time Brazilian and a first-time bikini service, and Brazilian maintenance should follow the last Brazilian within four to six weeks.

Facials are tailored to concerns including acne, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and fine lines, dry or dull skin, and relaxation. The express facial is a 30-minute cleanse, exfoliation, light mask and moisturizer, and the basic facial is a 60-minute multi-step treatment using PCA products. The signature and deluxe facials run 90 minutes and use Eminence Organic products; the deluxe adds steam, extractions when needed, a mask, massage, moisturizer and LED. The luxury facial, also 90 minutes, is described as using premium ingredients and as a spa-like experience. Dermaplaning uses a sterile blade to remove surface dead skin and fine facial hair, and it can be booked alone or added to a facial. Chemical peels use PCA products to exfoliate and resurface the skin, and the studio notes that most clients need at least three peels to see a difference. The Acne Treatment Package is $500 for a one-hour session and includes unlimited facials and chemical peels for the month along with home skincare products. A virtual acne consultation includes product recommendations and adjustments.

The men's facial addresses ingrown hairs, razor irritation, clogged pores, dryness and oiliness, and it does not require shaving beforehand. The vajacial is a 30-minute treatment for the external vulva and bikini area aimed at ingrown hairs, hyperpigmentation, irritation and uneven skin tone. A shorter 10-minute mask is also offered for the bikini line and external vulva.

Lash extensions come in classic, hybrid and volume styles, priced from $120 to $140, with a junior lash artist option at $100 per set. Fills are timed to the last set: classic and volume within two to four weeks, hybrid within three weeks. Lash extensions from another provider require a foreign fill lash consultation first. Lash lifts, lash tints and oil-based extension removal are also available. Brow services start from a client's existing brow structure: mapping sets a shape from natural growth, facial proportions and arch before hair removal, threading takes hairs from the root with a twisted strand of thread, tinting adds temporary color, and lamination brushes the hairs into a uniform, brushed-up look. These can be combined, such as mapping with threading and tint.

Booking requires a credit card on file, which is used to reserve the appointment, and payment is by card only. Appointments can be cancelled free of charge at least 24 hours ahead; later cancellations and no-shows carry a $50 fee or the full service fee. Times can be changed online, and clients who have made more than three cancellations cannot book. Clients must be 18 or older, and under-18 clients need a parent's signed consent. Refunds are not given on services or retail products. Gift cards do not expire, can be transferred, can be combined in one visit and can be used for retail products, though they cannot be returned.

Treatments are adjusted to each guest's skin concerns or brow structure rather than applied as one standard routine. The studio says each guest receives a personalized experience.

The studio describes its setting as clean, comfortable and upscale.
