The Wig by Helen began in 2011 as a retail business selling Korean hair accessories and hair extensions in a large US mall. It has since grown into a wig business that sells wigs, toppers, volume hair pieces, hair accessories and extensions, and it also styles and maintains wigs for clients.

After the pandemic she began developing natural-looking wigs with a long-standing factory partner. The product range includes 100% human hair wigs, lace-front wigs, toppers with front hair, clip-on toppers and volume hair pieces, along with headbands, claw clips and Korean hair clips.

Clients can book a free 30-minute consultation and trial with Helen before committing to anything. Wig styling for wigs, toppers or extensions takes about 45 minutes and is priced from $60 to $80 depending on the amount and length of hair; styles include updos, ponytails, curls and half-up half-down looks, with hair pins chosen to match jewelry. Washing and refreshing wigs bought from the store takes about 30 minutes.

The business also offers custom medical wigs, toppers and extensions, wig maintenance and men's toupees. Customers with medically related hair loss receive a 25% discount on in-stock items when they provide a doctor's note that matches their full legal name. The business says it directs some of its profits toward customers who cannot afford wigs, and it has announced a wholesale department to help immigrant entrepreneurs sell their products.

The Maryland studio is open by appointment Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm, and is closed Sunday and Monday. Clients can park on the street by the hour or use the Waverly Parking Garage within a block.
