The Hair Plug L.A was founded in 2014 by its owner, Jarelie M. The business began with hand made wigs sold through Facebook and Craigslist, with a goal of growing into a full-service salon. It now operates from its shop on East 1st Street and offers extension services, hair treatments, wig work and training.

Extensions are the core of the business. Signature Hair & Install is the main extension service, starting at $900. The business says its goal is to provide the highest quality hair extensions and describes itself as the original Hair Plug LA. Hair rebonding is offered under hair treatments, starting at $100.

Training is a major part of the offering. The Extension Master Class is a group course held over two full days from 9 AM to 5 PM, with an optional third hands-on day on a live model. It covers keratin, I-tip and beaded extension applications, hair analysis and consultations, preparing raw bulk hair, custom color creation and tape-in production. Each student receives a starter kit, 200 grams of hair, access to two hair vendors and a certificate of completion. The class costs $2,000 in total with a $600 deposit option, is open to cosmetology students, licensed cosmetologists and others seeking more training, and has limited space. According to the site, the instructor is a licensed cosmetologist with more than 14 years in the hair industry. Wig Making & Coloring 101 starts at $400 and Private 1:1 Courses start at $800.

Booking is by appointment only, with hours Wednesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM. Clients are asked to arrive on time, as there is a 15-minute grace period. A non-refundable deposit that goes toward the service is required at booking, and without it no hair customization, hair orders or appointments are provided. Late arrivals, no-shows and same-day cancellations forfeit the deposit. Cash, card, AfterPay and Klarna are accepted. Prices may change without notice.

The online store sells wigs, clip-in extensions and bulk hair, and some products can be picked up in the shop. The Atara wig in 20 inch is priced at $1,200 and is made to order with a turnaround of about two weeks. Clip-in extensions cost $1,400 for a 200 gram set in black or darkest brown, with a 7 to 14 day turnaround. Wigs are handmade and custom, so they cannot be returned or exchanged. Standard shipping in the US takes 3 to 5 business days for $8, and international orders ship via FedEx in 6 to 10 business days. Orders ship only to the confirmed credit card billing address and require a signature on delivery.

Each set is built around the individual client, using 100% human hair and custom handmade keratin capsules, with color services tailored to each client.
