The Curl Bar

The Curl Bar is a natural hair salon at 76 Cross Street in Somerville, built around curly hair. Toriah Mimms owns the salon and works as a stylist there. The salon describes its visits as an experience unlike others, and says the space is safe and free of judgment and welcomes all hair textures.

A visit starts with an in-depth consultation, which is included in every service. Cuts are done on dry natural curls, a method the salon suggests for clients who wear their hair natural most of the time, and a trim uses the same technique at the same price. New clients can book The Curl Bar Experience, which covers a consultation, cut or trim, deep cleanse, a customized treatment, a Spa Mist hydrating treatment, styling, one-on-one curl coaching and product recommendations. Returning clients can choose a Cut + Style or a Wash and Go, the latter without a cut.

Services are offered for children as well as adults. Curly Kids services are for ages 6 and up, and new and returning client services are for ages 12 and up. A parent must stay for a child's Experience session, and returning children may book a Cut + Style.

The salon is open Wednesday through Saturday, with hours that differ by day, and is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Appointments must be booked online, walk-ins are not taken, and a credit card is kept on file with a 50% deposit to secure a booking. Cancellations less than 48 hours ahead are charged the remainder of the service, and additional guests are not permitted at appointments. Parking is free street parking only, and spaces can be limited. The salon does not currently offer color, braids, twist outs or rod sets, but it works with color-treated hair, heat-damaged hair that can still be worn wash and go, and transitioning hair once all chemically treated hair has been cut off.
