It is cuts-only: haircuts and bang trims, with no color, chemical services, perms, chemical straightening, blowouts, updos, braiding, wedding styles, wanding or flat-ironing. Haircuts are not offered to children under 18.
The studio's specialty is undone cuts, designed to be air-dried and hand-styled with natural texture rather than heat-styled into shape. Tools and surfaces are sanitized with Barbicide between clients, and styling capes are not reused.
Prices follow a sliding scale with five levels: Community Care, Community Love, Relief, Sustaining and Pay What You Can. Community Care cuts start at $45 and are open to low-income guests, with no proof of income required. Community Love rates apply to people with multigenerational ties to El Sereno, Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights or Eastern LA. Pay What You Can days run quarterly on Sundays, roughly in February, May, August and November, and the exact dates are announced ahead of time. Guests can pay in dollars, with artwork, through trade, or with no payment at all.
Bookings open on the 1st of each month at 8am and run through the first week of the next month, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Clients can join a waitlist for a specific day, and last-minute cancellations go to the waitlist first. The studio asks for 24 hours' notice to cancel, and clients are asked not to wear perfume or cologne. Hair should arrive washed, detangled and styled as worn within the past 7 days, not in braids, ponytails or buns. Booking means agreeing to a media release for photos, audio and video taken during appointments. Guest parking is in the Eastern Dental lot next to the studio on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and there is free street parking on Eastern Avenue.
The studio hosts pop-up visiting stylists, education and events; contact the studio for details. Its site lists Best of Eagle Rock awards for 2014, 2015 and 2016, a Best of LA (LA Weekly Reader's Choice) award for 2015, a Salon to Watch mention from Refinery 29 in 2014, and a featured post in SF Girl By Bay on May 24, 2018. The studio also says it is a member of Green Circle, which it says diverts about 95 percent of its waste from landfill.
Clean-air, low-tox beauty paired with a sliding scale so services are accessible regardless of income, with business choices aimed at values rather than profit.
A private, clean-air studio.
