Strange Bird is a chemical-free, haircutting-only salon in Austin that describes itself as texture-inclusive and community-focused. It calls itself the first truly clean air cutting salon in Texas and says there are no aerosol, chemical or hair color fumes in the space, which it presents as suitable for clients with sensitivities and allergies.

The name refers to clients and stylists who have not felt at home in traditional salons, including sensitive, quieter, neurodivergent and creative people. The salon aims for a calmer, kinder and more affirming setting than a conventional one, and says services are never rushed and consultations are thorough.

Visits begin with a longer first appointment for new clients, which leaves time for a consultation. Existing clients can book shorter appointments, though stylist recommendations are the default. Pricing is hourly, so the cost of each appointment is stated before booking, and listed prices already include gratuity. Gift cards are available.

Strange Bird EDU is the salon's in-house education company. It offers haircutting classes covering curly cutting, razor cutting, bobs, mullets, shags and barbering. The program began to support the salon's own stylists and has grown to serve stylists across the country, and it can bring a class to a salon on request.

The salon supports its neighborhood through fundraising and allyship efforts. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 7pm. Paid parking is in the attached Holly Commons lot at roughly $4 per hour, paid by QR code. Free back-in parking is behind the building on 2nd Street, and free street parking is on Cesar Chavez Street in front of and across from the salon, subject to posted signs.
